Combining the most powerful elements from my personal mentors; the legendary Sanford Meisner, Alan Vint, an MFA -Master of Fine Arts- in Theatre, and over 39 years of on-set & stage experience... I have a very organized, meticulous, and effective approach that will give you a solid and reliable Acting Technique which will serve you to succeed in Film, TV and on stage
I begin with a bigger concept of what acting really is, and then we mindfully work our way backwards into scene work. I start wide, then dial-in with pin-point accuracy. This is a much different approach than most
Starting with a larger framework gives you incredible insight and perspective that will make your work as an actor much easier, less stressful, more comfortable, and deeply honest and truthful
Meisner
'The Reality of Doing'
'Living truthfully under imaginary circumstances'
The focus is for the actor to "get out of their head", such that the actor is behaving instinctively to the other actor & surrounding environment. Rooted in the exercise of 'Repetition' so that the words float like a boat along an emotional river where there is a greater focus on the other actor as opposed to one's internal thoughts or feelings associated to the character
Vint
The job of acting is one of illumination, to illuminate the words, to bring the light of understanding to the work. Just saying the words is not enough. It’s what you bring to the words that counts, your understanding of the material and your ability to bring the given realities of the play to life for yourself and then, for other people. How do you do that?
There are tools that we can use that lead us in the right direction, tools that we can use every time we book a job whether it’s film, TV, or on stage. Actors need to get at the heart of what the writer has written, of what the scene is ‘really’ about with all of its possible humanity, nuance and inherent conflicting emotions. We must see what’s in the play and execute. Actors need the tools which will allow them to unlock the play and then experience it. They need to develop their interpretation skills. It’s not about getting lucky and somehow mysteriously lining up with the writing. It’s about bringing intelligence to the table, understanding, interpretation, and technique
Quotes
–– Find a justified reason for why you’re are doing what you are doing… you must earn the right to be yourself under these circumstances. What would I do if I were in this situation? ––
–– Acting is not acting out an “idea” or an “attitude”, of “how” you think it should be… acting is to define everything, know what/how you feel about everything, and live under that, as yourself. If a scene is not working, then redefine your “choices” = redefine what/how you feel about everything. ––
Commitment level
Depending on the commitment level of the student, it typically takes 28 sessions to learn the tools to develop a Solid Acting Technique. After which it must be exercised, practiced, deepened and fine tuned. Acting is muscle memory, your body needs to learn it. Like going to the gym, ‘use it or you lose it.’ Many actors, even the famous ones, never stop training, and/or always consult with a One-on-One Mentor to help them prepare for important roles.
